When the Cardinals decided to dump Ryan Franklin as their closer last April, Boggs was the first guy in line to step into the role. He converted his first three opportunities without incident, blew his fourth, and then inexplicably got buried. Three weeks later, he was banished to the minor leagues for a month. Boggs has putaway stuff, with a high-90s fastball and sharp-breaking slider. With just a little confidence and consistency, he could be dominant.

Pitching exclusively in relief for the first time as a pro, Boggs enjoyed a three mph increase in his fastball velocity (to an average of 96). He also wields a nasty slider. Pitching coach Dave Duncan thinks he has the makings of a closer, but for that to happen Boggs will have to do better against left-handed hitters, who stung him for a .763 OPS last season.

Boggs took two very important steps last year: he started striking hitters out (7.1 Ks per nine innings) and keeping the ball down (52 percent groundball rate and only three homers in 58 innings). He had some bad luck on groundball outcomes (.347 average against, more than 100 points above the norm) and hurt himself with walks (5.1 BB/9).

Manager Tony La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan seem to have written Boggs off as a starter after 15 outings, but his fastball/slider combo played well out of the bullpen late last season.
