It took Randy Choate four organizations to find a home, but after failing with the Yankees, Diamondbacks and Brewers, he did very well for the Rays. Ideally, Choate would never face a right-handed batter again because he is one of the best in the business in shutting down lefthanded batters. He has faced 565 lefties in his career and held them to a .598 OPS, striking out 22 percent of those batters while allowing just four home runs.

Choate's 2009 OPS allowed versus lefties was .385. Versus righties it was .880. Make no mistake, Choate is a lefty-specialist. But Joe Maddon is not afraid to let him face righties as 59 of the opponents' plate appearances were right-handed batters. While most managers will use a lefty-specialist against just a single batter, Maddon often tries to get Choate more than one lefty, often at the expense of facing a righty in between. That will hurt his numbers, but ultimately makes him more valuable.
